First International Seminar on Asylum at the Court

First International Seminar on Asylum at the Court
2024-02-29

On 27-29 February 2024, the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania (SACL) hosted an international seminar "Introduction to the Common European Asylum System, the classification of persons in need of international protection and vulnerability related to applications for international protection" organised by the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA). The seminar was addressed to judges and assistant judges of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania (SACL) and the Regional Administrative Court dealing with international protection cases.

During the seminar, judges and assistant judges of Lithuanian administrative courts gained a deeper understanding of the Common European Asylum System, the definition of refugees and the elements of vulnerability of asylum seekers. Experts from Belgian, Irish and Italian courts shared their knowledge with the seminar participants.

According to the organisers, this in-depth training provided Lithuanian judges with the necessary knowledge to make fair and informed decisions to ensure the protection of asylum seekers' rights. "The subject matter of the training, and the fact that judges not only from Vilnius, but also from other Lithuanian cities came to the seminar, confirms our common commitment to improve legal knowledge and strengthen cooperation in the field of the EU asylum system, in order to ensure the quality of justice and the promotion of the values of human rights," emphasised the President of the Supreme Administrative Court of Lithuania, Skirgailė Žalimienė, who was also a speaker at the training.
